5 Movies with Alcohol at the Heart of the Plot

Movies are excellent entertainment. They are also art. Sometimes they tell human stories that touch on serious life issues and challenges we humans face.

Alcoholism is a problem that many people may be familiar with. Whether they have dealt with the issue, or someone they know has struggled to put down the bottle, several moves have explored the topic.

Are you looking for movies with alcohol at the heart of the plot? Here are some that you may want to check out. If you are looking for more great films, don’t pass over our article about great films by genre!

A Star Is Born (2018)

This is a Bradley Cooper remake of a story that is a remake of three other movies. It is an exciting story of a fading rock star who is also an alcoholic. The main character Jack, played by Bradly Cooper, is a depressed star who falls in love with a rising pop singer, played by Lady Gaga, who he helped bring to the limelight. There is no happy ending here as his drinking problem worsens. The movie received 8 Oscar nominations and won 1.

Flight (2012)

This is an excellent movie that follows the story of Captain Whip Whitaker, played by Denzel Washington, an alcoholic airline pilot who manages to land an ill-fated flight and saves several lives. Things don’t turn out rosy as he becomes embroiled in a serious investigation. He also fails to address his drinking problem, even when the investigation threatens his freedom and pilot license.

The Lost Weekend (1945)

This is the oldest movie on this list but deserves its place here. It is a Billy Wilder’s classic that follows the life of an alcoholic New York writer played by Ray Milland. In its day, the movie was highly acclaimed and won 4 Academy Awards.

Trainwreck (2015)

In most movies about alcohol, the abuser is often male. Trainwreck challenges this with the story of a female writer for a men’s magazine. The story follows Amy Townsend (Amy Schumer), who lives for two things: alcohol and men. A typical party girl, things change a little for Amy when she meets a sports doctor named Aaron (Bill Hader). Despite her fortunes in life, the alcohol leads her down many wrong roads.

Leaving Las Vegas (1995)

This movie tells the story of Ben (Nicolas Cage), who, after being fired from his job, decided that the best thing to do is to move to Las Vegas and drink himself to death. He eventually falls in love with a prostitute, but ultimately can’t keep it together. It ends in tragedy too.

There you have it! Any fan of film should consider watching one of these movies. Not only do they star amazing actors and actresses, but they are also good movies.

If you are a drinker, then you may find something to relate to, especially with how alcohol can disrupt your life. If you are a casual drinker and want to enjoy a glass of wine with your movie, then looking into the use of supplements to help you feel normal again the next morning may not be such a bad thing. Nutri-West, Natures Secret, and Barlean’s Organic Oils are supplement brands that may be ideal for cases where you need to be up and ready to go the next morning.
