Why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Left the Royal Family

When, in November 2019, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle (Duke and Duchess of Sussex) decided to take a six-week break in Canada with their baby Archie, few people saw the handwriting on the wall. It didn’t take long after they returned to the UK for the couple to announce their intention to “carve out a progressive new role”.

This has spurred many new theories, which come on the back of other similar rumors, such as a relationship with Elaine Thompson.

The announcement came as a shock to the general public. One can also assume that some top-ranking members of the royal family were surprised too as the week after the announcement was quite dramatic. A statement from the palace suggested that the Queen, grandmother of Harry, wanted to quickly come to an agreement on the couple’s future.

It was clear from the statements that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will no longer be regarded as senior members of the royal family. They were no longer to be addressed as His Royal Highness and Her Royal Highness; they will seize to make official royal appearances; and will no longer accept public funds. They are also expected to refund the money that was used to refurbish their home in Windsor.

Prior to the agreement with the queen and other senior members of the royal family, Meghan and Harry had announced that they will split their time between The United Kingdom and North America. On 20th January, 2020, Prince Harry arrived in Canada after attending what is supposedly his last official royal appearance. He joined Meghan and Archie who arrived a week and a half ago, and we can say that the new chapter of their lives has begun.

There has been several theories about why the Prince, a beloved grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and his wife will leave the royal family the way they did. Many had to even bring back the situation surrounding the death of Princess Diana, Harry’s Mother. The Prince mad made statements suggesting that he wants to protect his new wife and baby from the same forces that made him lose his mother. He also said it brought him “great sadness that it has come to this”, and reiterated severally that “there really was no other option.”

Clearly, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry want to live their personal lives away from the scrutiny of the public and the constant harassment from the press. We can only wish them luck.
